Background

Driftpile Cree Nation (DCN) created its own Child and Family Services Act, Mihtatakaw Sîpiy Awas’ak Wiyasiwêwin, which was passed on September 28, 2022.

This act empowers DCN to assume full jurisdiction and authority over its children and youth, ensuring that all services are developed and delivered in a way that meets the unique needs of the community while preserving cultural continuity.

Chief Kinosew Awasak Mikiwahp (CKAM), the name of our Children’s Lodge, was federally incorporated on May 29, 2023, to manage these services.

Project Progress

Programs and Services: DCN has been working diligently to develop the Children’s Lodge, along with various programs that prioritize family preservation and the integration of cultural practices. Elders and Knowledge Keepers play a central role in shaping these services.

Dispute Resolution: The establishment of a Dispute Resolution Tribunal, separate from provincial family courts, is underway to prevent further trauma and ensure decisions are made within the community’s cultural context.

Exciting Developments: Coordination and Fiscal Agreements are expected to be finalized by August 2024. A signing ceremony is planned to take place in Edmonton with Chief Dwayne Laboucan, federal and provincial representatives.

Our Vision

Creating a community where our children thrive, growing up connected to their family, culture, and traditions.
